Shinjuku Alley Restaurant

Shinjuku Alley Restaurant 2006-12-13

Here's another quick look inside a little restaurant along "Piss Alley" in Shinjuku (a reader provided the local name for the place). The alley is narrow and dark. The shop doors are open and you catch a glimpse inside as you pass each one. Most of the shops had a few salarymen inside sitting at counters. Most were eating yakitori (ordered by the skewer) and drinking beer. I didn't enter any of the shops, and I was very careful about taking pictures. It's obviously a place with lots of history and local culture, and I didn't want to offend anyone or be asked to leave. I'd like to go back another time with a friend and give one of the places a try.

  • Yes, I'd like to see more of these places.

  • I really miss these sort of places. (I think it is yakitori rather than yakiniku, though.)

  • Hiya Andy. Yes sometimes called "Piss Alley" but official name is "Welcome Alley" or "Omoide Yokocho". One of my favourite haunts in Shinjuku which has, I have noticed over the last few years, begun to develop a certain down at heal fashionalbility with youunger Japanese. It used to be just old salary men and a few adventurous tourists but now it is just abaout anyone. Great place see you for a bear them some time. It`s days are number though I am told a stay of execution is in effect at the moment but it cannot be long before it is replaced with some souless corporate chain effort at artificailly recreating the same atmosphere a la Omotosando Hills.
See this article from an English newspaper about it:

  • I like the crisp focus on this one; it's a very busy shot but a visually interesting one. What are the red and white tags posted along the wall?

  • Damon - Drop me an email when you have time. And I figured you didn't mean a real bear. Interesting article, too.

  • Yeah it was 3am when I wrote that and as i read it now the spelling is awful.
Will be in Shinjuku this Sunday afternoon though I have some work to shoot (perhaps) in Harajuku and some stuff for personal projects but would love to catch up. Am doing a story (actually still at the planning stage and the developing contacts stage) on Omoide Yokocho at this moment so would be good to have that beer. It would be work and pleasure!!!
