I took this shot of Mari at the preschool's sweet potato roasting party yesterday. Yes, we ate roasted sweet potatoes (a giant pile of 'em), sweet potato soup, deep fried sweet potatoes, sweet potato cupcakes, and even sweet potato mochi. After the party we came home and, in a fit of inspiration, made Japanese cream stew with sweet potatoes and green chile (that we brought back from New Mexico). That was quite good. We have a few leftover roasted sweet potatoes in the kitchen, and I'll be happy to give any really good ideas a try. Otherwise, I was thinking about sweet potato pancakes tomorrow morning.
Today we went to meet with a realtor to look at some land with a house sitting on it. It's a very big piece of land, and it's very cheap because: a) most of the land is a hillside, and b) there may be questions about getting permission to rebuild the house due to a concern about a possible mud slide. (The house is basically thrown in for free with the expectation that a buyer will rebuild.) But did I say it's cheap? The part of the land you can build on is still respectably large, and it's within a 13 minute walk from a station: all for a bit over 8,000,000 yen (less than $80,000).
We're not rushing to buy a house (or build one), just looking... The place where we're renting now is only available for another year. Then the owner is coming back and we'll have to move. But if something really good becomes available in the meantime we might bite; although this one is dubious...
Oh, we didn't meet the realtor, so we didn't see the land (yet, maybe soon). That part is a boring(er) story though.
