Human Sign, Part Three

Human Sign, Part Three 2006-05-14

This photo is 3 of 3 in a series of images starting here. Each image features someone acting as a human sign. Each is complex enough to look at and think about for awhile, but they are all VERY different. I think you'll enjoy looking at them together.

This photo shows a man wearing a cape covered with sticky notes (which I'll explain below). Besides being warm and fun (compared to the others), I like the balance of tones and the way the whole scene unfolds and works together. The laughing face (at 3 o'clock) points toward the the odd face in the background. From there you can trace a line from the onlooker's head, down his arm to the girl posting a note. Then the eye naturally follows the cape up to the red hed (ending with a mystery).

In case you're wondering what's going on, here's the story. I took this in an area featuring student groups who are concerned about the environment. One group was recycling paper into postcards (a nice art project for the kids). Another group was calling on people to xerox copies on the backs of unneeded paperwork. They had a table covered with copies, and on the back of each copy was some boring form or other. Hmm, funny noone ever thought of this before. :) This guy -- in the photo above -- was dressed as a super hero (or some sort of pervert, but I'm going with "super hero".) His was holding a sign that said something like, "What will you do to save energy?" Then people would write their pledges on sticky notes and put them on the cape.

One person wrote: "I will never flush the toilet again."
