Prayer for U2 at the Shrine

Prayer for U2 at the Shrine 2006-01-18

The title says it all. This is an "ema" -- like a votive prayer board. People buy them in Shinto shrines, write a few words, and then hang them on large racks. I've taken several pictures of "ema" before, because they make an interesting cultural image, but this is my favorite.

When I took this photo, U2's "Vertigo Tour" had not confirmed any dates in Japan yet (although Japan was listed as a one of the destinations). As of now, there is one date scheduled for April 4, 2006 at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama (see here). I saw U2 on the Joshua Tree tour (at the Sport's Center in Los Angeles, and I'd love to see them again. But I imagine tickets will be expensive and hard to get. Anyone know where to buy them and how much?

  • I love the prayers you can find just walking around in shinto shrines. I once found one that said, "I want to be Spiderman."

  • This is such an awesome shot! I can't believe there was a U2 prayer put there and you found it for the photo. Excellent! You ought to send the photo to them...you might get a surprise set of tickets in the mail!

  • Personally, I feel like this image has potential (in a "pop cultural" sense). I'd love to see it in a magazine. But I don't have any contacts or sense of how to make that happen. I'll post it on a stock photography site, I suppose, but if you have a better suggestion I'd love to hear (well, read) it. Oh, and thanks. I'm glad you all like it as well.

  • I think it's interesting how the ema is adressed to U2 themselves, rather than a spirit or deity.

  • I mean, I'm not saying that was an option for that person. I can only assume that they were visiting the Shinto shrine as a tourist. But, it is as if U2 can listen to and answer prayers adressed to them.

  • I managed to get some tickets through a pre-sale for members of the official U2.com website. I've been in Japan since 1989 and arrived that year just in time to see them at Yokohama Arena. This time they play at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama - the one and only time I've been there was to watch Ireland beat Saudi Arabia in the World Cup! Roll on April 4th! "Early morning, April 4 / A shot rings out in the Memphis sky" - an auspicious date indeed!

  • Andy, I am going to post this page on a new module platform sight. It is the newest form of representing yourself on the web. The reason I am going to post it on http://www.squidoo.com/goodlife is because I want to invite the lensmaster that created the bono site to come take a look... hopefully it will bring him here and he might ad this to his site. Oh and its FREE! So hopefully you will come and visit so that you can see why you should join this community up with your blog. I really like your "work/fun" so I have your blog site listed there.

  • Hi,
I was in search for God during a moment of loss. Somehow, I stumble across a website that changed my life.
I felt my prayers remained unheard from above. And when I contacted www.justaprayer.com I didn't actually expected it would work. The strength of several people praying for you besides yourself is really amazing. It's like ... well, I have no comparison in fact. It's so powerful. And it works !

I personnaly invite all of those who seek help in prayers to visit this website : http://www.justaprayer.com They helped me a lot !
Since they have prayed for me, I feel I am closer to God than ever. Hope you'll feel the same. It's wonderful !!!

    God bless you all.

  • If you are in not good state and have no money to move out from that point, you would require to take the personal loans. Just because that should aid you definitely. I get term loan every time I need and feel great just because of it.
