Homes, Sunset Glow, and Power Lines

Homes, Sunset Glow, and Power Lines 2005-12-11

Cast a vote today in the Weblog Awards here

It's going to take a big shift in the voting for any of the "pure" photo blogs to catch Zombie Time, which has benefited from recommendations by high profile political blogs. If you are thinking about putting up a recommendation on your own blog, now is a good time.

I took this shot yesterday walking along the river near our house. You can't miss the power lines here in Japan. They are overhead almost everywhere you go. But it's still a sight to see see high voltage lines passing through a residential neighborhood (at sunset).

It reminds me of a radio talk show that I listened to when driving across the country one time. The guest speaker said that they cannot prove statistically a significant link between power lines passing overhead and senility. But they can prove statistically a link between eating lots of hot dogs and senility... Rather than worrying about power lines, he advised not feeding your kids hot dogs. Still, I wouldn't want to live under one of these towers.

  • Every time I visit Japan the first thing sight that tells me I'm in Japan are the big red and white power line towers.

  • Are you sure that isn't an incinerator tower? :D

  • Power lines and hot dogs....reminds me in Freakonomics how Steven Levitt showed that having a swimming pool in your backyard is 100 times more likely to be lethal than having a gun in your house....or the odds of a Chicago drug dealer dying are far higher than someone on death row in Texas.

  • I really the soothing atmosphere provided by the backdrop. It's a real interesting photo that makes you think about the effects of all those volts of energy surging overhead everyday. Especially if you live in a large city. This is definitely one I would frame and put on a wall in my home.
