Nikon D70 Impressions in Shinjuku

Today I went to Shinjuku to look at digital SLR cameras. I figured that since I live in Tokyo, Japan (possibly the camera capital of the world), then I shouldn't be sitting at home on the Internet searching for this information. I wanted to compare the Canon 10D and Digital Rebel (300D) again, and I hoped to learn more about the Nikon D70 that's coming out on March 18. Much to my surprise, I was pointed to the "Nikon Salon" (on the 28th floor of a building next to Bik Camera). When I went there I not only saw a Nikon D70, but I actually got to use it with the CF card that I had with me.

If the store you buy from doesn't have an English-language manual, you can go to the Nikon service centre and they'll swap the Japanese manual with an English one free of charge (provided they have one, of course, although they seem to have versions in several languages for all of their currently shipping gear).

Thanks for the heads-up about the D70 being available at the service centre. I may be in there tomorrow as it turns out for some routine work and will definitely be sure to take a spare CF card along. ;-)

So I go into the service centre today and there's the D70 -- with a piece of gaffer tape over the door to prevent anyone inserting their own card! You were lucky to be able to get some shots with it. That particular camera may have been a pre-production unit; manufacturers generally don't want images from pre-release machines circulating.

There's a Nikon event happening at the Marunouchi Bldg. until tomorrow apparently where they'll let you shoot *and* print from the D70.
