Standing on the Beach

Standing on the Beach 2005-09-28

We had a wonderful time in Sendai a couple of weeks ago. I've been waiting to post a few of the pictures, but I'm so tired tonight...I just really wanted to choose this photo and not another urban street scene. I love to see my kids in the outdoors enjoying nature. We've taken them to the beach before, but I think this was the first time they'll actually remember playing in the waves. I took my daughter out just beyond the (very small) break and let her float as the waves passed under her. After we came home she said that was her best memory of the trip. Speaking for myself, dad's live for things like that.

We didn't see much of Sendai or even the surrounding area. We were able to walk from the place where we stayed to this spot, so we had little reason to go elsewhere.

  • What an unusual beach scene! Are those islands that we see just offshore, or does the coastline curve around to form those protrusions? By the standards of the California beaches that I am used to, it is very unusual to see plants growing right up to the water's edge as they do there--especially as the place where the girls are standing is so sandy and plant-less. I am sure that that memory is as precious to your daughter as it is to you: a physical sensation of being loved that she will remember always, and bring up later when life is not so sweet.

  • Those are man-made break water barriers Vicki. Here is a closer view from an earlier post by Andy: http://www.japanwindow.com/index.php?showimage=140 I like the juxtaposition of the girls in the gap between the break waters. It is like they found their escape point from whatever you want the break waters to represent: problems, fears, restrictions, etc. It would have been better if they were directly centered though. :D

  • Aw...your children grew so much since the last posts. Especially Reia: she seems so tall now...

  • Oh, so they are not plants. Thanks Chris. I saw that earlier picture, bit did not connect the two.
